Play and work…?

September’s monthly lunch meeting in eLearning Lab took members of the research group out to play. After moving to new premises in AAU’s city campus, we have been able to upgrade our lab-facilities, and today we played with an interactive social streem on interactive screens.

It was a fun thing to play around with, and also a something with communicative potential - both as a modern ‘water cooler’ (places where informal meetings take place, and news, gossip, and other useful information is exchanged); and as a way of communicating to visitors and outsiders about our doings.

Back to work - after a nice summer break :-)
August will be a very busy start on the second half of 2011. A number of CoED-workshops are planned at University College Syd’s different campuses; last week Tom Nyvang and I were in Sønderborg, Åbenrå and Haderslev; and in the coming week two workshops are planned in Esbjerg.
At the same time, eLearning Lab is moving to new premises at Aalborg University’s new ‘city campus’ in Nyhavnsgade 14. Not an easy task, and many colleagues are working hard to establish a good working environment in our new buildings. Looking forward to settling in during the coming semester.
On September 1st, our students return from their summer break. We will be teaching close to 600 students in our new buildings which should offer more rooms for teaching, group work, etc. We are very excited to see the potential of our new surroundings reveal itself when met with our large cohorts of students.

Congratulations, Malene :-)
Our colleague from eLearning Lab, Malene Larsen, succesfully defended her Ph.D.-thesis on Friday the 16th. Her research is on children and young people’s use of social network technologies, and she has carried out a fascinating empirical study over a period of five years. Read more about Malene’s work here

Changes, changes, changes…
After the summer break, it is time for some local changes. It has been decided to reorganise eLearning Lab as we have expanded on the staff side. We are taking new office spaces into use on the second floor of our building.
To make a complete change of thing, it has been decided that everyone should move to a new office or new desk in old office space. So around 30 people have packed and unpacked stuff, moved furniture, cleared out old spaces and taken into use new ones. Since Aug. 9th, my office has looked very much like the picture above, but I am sure things will clear up eventually :-) Very soon I will find the time to tidy up, put up shelves, unpack boxes, etc.

Exciting talk about Asian University for Women in eLL today
The title and topic of the talk: Asian University for Women - Pioneering Liberal Arts Education in South Asia.
By Faheem Hussain and Fabiha Naumi, AUW
“This talk is about Asian University for Women (AUW), the first liberal arts university in the region. The presentation will cover information on the core objectives behind the establishment of this institution. It will also focus on some key development processes within the first year of AUW’s undergraduate program: Curriculum design, Student life, and interdisciplinary learning.”
A group of colleagues from different parts of the university took part in the session, and all very listening in awe, fascinated by this fantastic project.
